A Cylindrical Lens is one that focuses light into a straight line. A cylindrical lens’s curved face is made up of sections of a cylinder that focus the image travelling through it onto a line parallel to the junction of the lens’s surface and a plane tangent to it. The lens compresses the image in the direction perpendicular to this line while leaving it unchanged in the parallel direction. It is used to correct for certain types of vision defects, such as astigmatism, and in applications such as spectroscopy, laser scanning, image projection, and optical systems to create an elongated or compressed image. It is also used in photography and film production to control the focus and distortion of an image.

Cylindrical lens are often made from materials such as glass or plastic, and are available in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit different applications. They are typically used in combination with other lenses, such as spherical lenses, in order to achieve the desired level of correction or image manipulation. Some examples include using them in microscopy to focus light on a specific area, or in ophthalmology to correct vision issues such as astigmatism. Cylindrical lenses are also used in many industrial and scientific applications, such as laser scanning, fiber-optic communication, and imaging systems.
